  • St George’s Preparatory School in Port Elizabeth in a class of its own

St George’s Preparatory School, Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape

You’ll find a place where kids can enjoy a warm, caring environment while learning new things and making great friends, at St George’s Preparatory School in Port Elizabeth.

The staff strives to make sure all their students receive an all-round education in a nurturing and beautiful environment.

At St George’s Prep, your child can experience a stimulating and challenging academic programme, a vibrant sports programme as well as a wide range of cultural activities. They believe that with kindness, mutual respect and strong moral values, they can create a lasting foundation for life and learning.

Situated in Park Drive in Port Elizabeth, the school caters for almost 500 students from Grade 000 to Grade 7. The school consists of the Pre-Preparatory, Junior Preparatory and Senior Preparatory and is an independent co-educational school for children between the ages of 3 and 13.

St George’s Preparatory School has a long and proud history

The school was founded in 1936 by Raymond Hutchinson to provide private school education for boys between the ages of 7 and 14 so that they would be prepared for public schools in both South Africa and overseas.

The school became co-ed in 1987 and the Pre-Preparatory opened their doors in 2000.

With their dedication to learning and providing the best resources for their students, St George’s Prep has over the past 82 years become a beacon in the community, encouraging creativity through learning.

They maintain small classes to ensure that their students all receive individual attention from their teachers. Their many well-maintained facilities and use of the latest technology helps ensure that their objective to provide world-class schooling is achieved.

St George’s Preparatory School embraces new facilities and technology for their students

Recent additions to the school are the Arts and Media Centre and a Multi-Purpose Astro Sports Facility. They are also currently redesigning their learning areas to encourage both creativity and collaboration.

St George’s Preparatory added a digital layer to the learning environment, and in 2012 was awarded SMART Showcase school status.

In 2016, St George’s Prep also became an official Google Apps for Education School and all pupils in Grades 4 to 7 bring their own iPads to school on a daily basis. In addition, the school is equipped with 4 Smart Televisions and 15 interactive Smart Boards.

At St George’s Prep they believe in ‘blended learning’, where instead of completely removing textbooks from the curriculum and replacing them with iPads, they combine online education materials with the physical presence of the teacher and the student.

The pupils therefore experience a wide range of different approaches and media, thus preparing them for the future and equipping them with the technological skills they will need in the workplace.

They firmly believe that the students who leave their school are some of the most well-prepared pupils in the country, and will be able to step into the future with confidence, equipped with the right skills to cope with an ever-changing environment.

  • Teaching Study Skills at Kip McGrath Education Centres

    Whose Responsibility Is It Anyway?

Kip McGrath Education Centres Walmer offers a study skills course to help children and parents address the entire process of studying.

Exams bring its fair share of stress and pressure. It is a time when teachers, parents and children feel overwhelmed by the volumes of work that need to be covered in class and committed to memory at home.

Parents often feel that teachers should provide more guidance about how to study. Teachers feel that they have mountains of content to cover and do not have enough time to review the content as well. This leaves one wondering, who will show a child how to get through all the topics on their exam scope?

    Too Little, Too Late

There is no magic trick to replace making and spending enough time to review work covered in class well in advance. Children’s busy afternoon programmes barely leave them with enough time to complete their homework for the following day. If a child only completes homework and skims over work for weekly tests without making summaries of the work covered in class, it leads to huge chunks of content to be covered prior to the exam. Mom, is it perhaps time to help your child to cut down on afternoon activities?

    Keywords are Key

Making summaries of work covered in class needs to be done on a consistent basis. It reduces the workload prior to exams. When the key points have been highlighted and summarised, the child only has to focus on what has already been selected as the most important content. The child can then use the keywords to formulate sentences in his/her own words. Children often think that they have to repeat the words of the textbook verbatim. However, it is more important to retell the facts in a way that makes sense to them.

    Mock Tests

Help your child to set his/her own test paper by formulating their own questions with answers. This will help them feel more prepared and less anxious before their exams.

Kip McGrath Education Centres Walmer offers a study skills course to help children and parents address the entire process of studying.

Chrizelle Prinsloo is the owner of Kip McGrath Education Centres, Walmer.  She has a background in psychology and has taught in mainstream and special-needs schools both locally and abroad. Chrizelle is passionate about helping children gain confidence in their own abilities and about finding different ways to help them learn.

  • Woodridge College & Preparatory School in Port Elizabeth invests in solar energy

Woodridge College & Preparatory School, Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape

In order to reduce their impact on the environment, Woodridge College & Preparatory School in Port Elizabeth has invested in a Genergy solar solution with just over 1100 panels installed on the campus recently.

This system will see the school reduce its CO2 emissions by roughly 597 tons per annum.

Due to its unique location on the edge of the Van Stadens River gorge, Woodridge has always nurtured strong ties to the outdoors. It is an essential part of the school’s ethos and is entrenched in how it educates pupils.

With an estimated 30% reduction in energy consumption costs, the aim to utilise savings, once the project is paid off, to enhance the school and develop its offering even further.

Woodridge has used the impact of the 2017 fires as an opportunity to modernise, rebuild and restore buildings with energy efficiency in mind, and care for the countryside around the school as it recovers from the fires.

The school is using the tragedy as a positive learning experience to understand is surroundings, protect the beauty that surrounds the grounds and lessen its impact in the broader environment.

Woodridge aims to help reduce CO2 emissions with solar panels

Several classrooms, as well as the dining hall and two school halls, two residences, the library, the administrative building, and the sanatorium have been fitted with the panels.

“Our brief was to create a system that reduced the amount of electricity the school pulls from the grid and thereby reduce its reliance on fossil-fuel-generated power,” remarks Genergy Head of Engineering, Michael Stevens.

This move is part of the school’s Eco Smart initiative, which is under the direction of Woodridge alum Ray Holmes. They hope to become a leading eco-school in South Africa and a leading globally registered eco-school.

The initiative is comprised of different phases, starting with solar energy and eventually moving towards water security and recycling.

“It is an honour for Woodridge College & Preparatory School to be amongst a handful of schools in South Africa, which are at the forefront of renewable energy in education,” remarks Derek Bradley, Headmaster of Woodridge College.

“We believe that it is vital to teach responsible energy practices to the next generation of our country’s leaders, and in doing so foster environmental stewardship practically and tangibly.

“Our approach allows us to lead by example and assist the country in alleviating the strain on the municipal grid.”

  • Reasons Why You Should Get a Dog for Your Kids

Getting a dog would mean adding an extra friend to the family. Getting a dog would mean always having a friendly, furry, furiously-wagging tailed friend smile at you every time you walk in the house.

If you’ve ever owned a pet, you already know how much fun and affection they can bring. Dogs are funny and sometimes seem to understand us in a way no other human can. Ask any dog owner whether their dog makes them feel better and you will always get the same answer.

Experts don’t seem to know either. Dogs can hear, smell, and see babies, but they don’t really know what a baby is, so it is shocking when dogs treat babies differently than adults. While your dog may not care much about adults, you might notice that your dog seems especially interested in babies.

Top reasons why you should get a dog for your kids:

    • Dogs Teach Responsibility
    • Dogs Build Up the Immune System
    • Dogs Offer Protection
    • Dogs Keep Kids Active
    • Dogs Teach Children Unconditional Love
    • Dogs are just like kids
    • They take the stress out of new social situations
    • Dogs help children cope with isolation and depression
    • Children who grow up with a dog are less likely to develop allergies.
    • Dogs can help kids learn important social skills
    • Dogs protect children from skin conditions and allergies

Remember that your children will have to be trained on how to treat the dog.

When you bring the puppy home make sure it has several days to adjust before it is played with too much. Make up a set of house rules for the children concerning the new dog and post it on the wall or the refrigerator.

They are great nap time pals

Reasons Why You Should Get a Dog for Your Kids

Dogs really do deserve their title of ‘man’s best friend’. They’re loyal, intelligent, devoted and loving – and are known to improve our physical and mental health. When it comes to deciding which dogs make the best pets, it really does depend on your lifestyle and the environment you live in.

You may have many best friends but your dog only has one.

Reasons Why You Should Get a Dog for Your Kids

When it comes to allowing your dog near babies, it is important that you exercise extreme caution, even if your puppy has been around babies in the past.

Dogs and people live happily together with a very small risk of infections being transmitted back and forth. However, there are a few special considerations with children.

With the proper training and supervision, a dog can enrich your child’s life.  After all, dogs are basically four-legged children who never grow up.

Children who grow up with dogs have a lower risk of developing eczema than those who have cats or no dogs at all. Yes, it’s true! Children also develop fewer pet allergies if they grow up with a dog.

As expected, the researchers found that children living with pets were generally better off than children who did not have a pet. If your child walks her dog in the morning before school she will have an easier time concentrating in the classroom.

    Dogs have your back

Dogs are social, pack animals and they look to you for leadership and approval. That means they require lots of attention.

They need petting and play on a regular basis. If you don’t do this, the dog will be unhappy, and may even engage in destructive behaviour such as chewing up your furniture and possessions.

Another important reason why one should get a dog for a pet is that pets have been shown to improve the mood of their owners. Instead of feeling lonely and moody, one should get a dog because the dog will give the owner unconditional love and therefore help one to psychologically feel better.

“The greatest pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too.” — Samuel Butle

  • Grade 9 subject choices – More options require greater thought

Grade 9 learners will soon have the exciting task of selecting the subjects they want to pursue for the next 3 years, on which they will be tested during the final exams. Because of the withdrawal of the designated subject list by the Department of Basic Education last year, they are truly spoilt for choice, but this also means they need to be more focused than ever, because their decision now can have far-reaching and even life-altering consequences, an education expert says.

“It’s a tough ask of teenagers to make a commitment now which will affect their ability to gain access to higher education and potentially their qualification of choice in four years’ time, when many are not even yet sure what they want to study after school,” says Dr Gillian Mooney, Dean: Academic Development and Support at The Independent Institute of Education, SA’s largest private higher education provider.

“It is therefore very important for them to firstly realise the gravity of the potential consequences of the choices they make now, and then, to really consider the strategy which will keep as many doors as possible open down the line,” she says.

Mooney explains that Grade Nines are required to select at least seven subjects on which they will be tested in Matric, four of which are compulsory: Home Language, Second Language, Maths or Maths Literacy, and Life Orientation. The balance then, are elective subjects, and should be chosen carefully.

“Because there are no longer so-called designated subjects, learners may be tempted to choose subjects they envision will be comparatively easier than others, in order to gain the best possible Matric marks,” she says.

“However they need to consider not only which subjects will ensure they get admission to higher education, but also which subjects will allow them admission into their chosen qualification. If they don’t yet know what they want to do, they need to make sure that their choice positions them well to access a wide range of qualifications. Their selection must also ensure they can claim a well-rounded education upon completion of their schooling.”

Mooney says Grade Nines – with the help of their parents or guardians, and ideally even with the help of career and student counsellors from a respected higher education institution – need to carefully weigh up their various options, and the various combinations of subjects that are suitable for them.

“The aim is to choose those subjects that will leave you with a wide range of options, while at the same time also positioning you optimally to perform well in your last three years of school,” she says.

“Your subject choice must enable you to demonstrate proficiency in critical thinking and numeracy, and particularly important is the choice between Maths and Maths Literacy, as many university courses still require core maths,” she says.

Choosing three relatively easy subjects as electives might help a learner achieve good aggregate marks, but their options will be limited if their education doesn’t incorporate those subjects that teach logic and argumentation, and scientific and reasoning skills as found in for instance History, Accountancy and Maths, and Physical and Life Sciences, says Mooney.

“So it would not be wise to go for the short-term gain of spectacular marks, instead of implementing a long-term vision which will support an holistic academic development, as the impact on the future student’s studies – which require higher reasoning than what is expected at school – will be significant, even if they do qualify for study,” she says.

“The best way to future-proof your study options and therefore career choices, as well as your ability to be resilient and adapt to currently unpredictable changes in the world of work –  is to get as solid a grounding during your last three years of school as possible, even if it is going to be more challenging.

“Before making your choice, make an effort to gain as much information about admission requirements for potential career paths from a wide range of higher education institutions, and then to work back to ensure that your subjects will enable you to enter those fields. Very importantly however, ensure that your choices reflect a wide enough range to develop an extended skills base which will serve you well into the future.”

  • Choosing a pre school: Guide on how to find a good preschool for your kids

Choosing a pre-school for your child can be both an exciting and frustrating experience

You most certainly landed on this page because your child is going to pre school next year. If you feel overwhelmed trying to navigate your way through the whole process of choosing a pre school for your child – trust me, you’re not alone, been there!

As with most things nowadays, the process of choosing a pre school almost certainly begins with a “preschool near me” Google search. Depending on where you live, you can expect millions of Google search results on the subject as well as many results on Google Maps showing the location of day-cares, pre schools and other offerings near your location.

For me narrowing it down with a search for “affordable preschool near me” or “best preschool near me” still produced a huge list of offerings to sift through.

So how do you go about choosing the right pre school for your child?

What to look for in a pre school

“When visiting preschools, evaluate practical issues specific to your family’s needs. These include the school’s hours, proximity to your home or work, available transportation, after-hours options, cost, class size, and staff/child ratio,” Hilary Levey Friedman, Ph.D., parenting expert and author of Playing to Win: Raising Children in a Competitive Culture told Parents.com.

“Be sure to ask about the application and admission procedures and the timeline for these. Start considering programs early and get information to make sure you don’t miss any deadlines.”

It’s true, as a first-time parent, no sooner had I started my own search for a pre school for my child did I discover that I should probably have done the search at least six months or more prior to submitting applications at the schools that we eventually settled for.

In many towns and cities, parents actually have to be on waiting lists for years to get their kids into the best pre schools.

To make your work easier, Kids Connection magazine has compiled the ‘what to look for in a preschool checklist’ below to help parents navigate their way to the best pre school for their child.

    • Reputation, reputation, reputation – We cannot stress this enough. Reputation is an important consideration when choosing a pre school. Ask family and friends about the pre school that you are considering. Nowadays, it’s also easy to go online and check what other people have to say about the place. If course, you cannot just form an opinion about a place from the word of probably some disgruntled parents, so be prepared to visit the pre school for a tour. While you are there, make your own observations. If something does not feel right – agreeing with the negative things you may have heard about the place, it’s probably wise to keep looking.
    • Location – This is probably an obvious one. You will probably want a pre school that is closer to your place of residence and work – preferably along your route to work. Unless you have a driver, or part of a pool car, enrolling your child to a pre school far from home means every day you have to drive longer than you should.
    • A stimulating curriculum – Who does not see the world’s next great inventor, pilot, doctor or engineer in their child? It is every parent’s wish to have their children receiving the best education they can afford. A well-designed curriculum will stimulate your child’s development and make daily life more fun. At this age, children can begin learning things like how letters and numbers are used. But your child is not yet ready for rigorous studying yet – so don’t be quick to judge a pre school on what children are taught. Instead also look at their daily schedules, which will include plenty of time for physical activity, quiet time (including regular story time), group programs, socializing, crafts, individual activities, meals, snacks, and free time. The idea is that if your child won’t get a wide range of age-appropriate activities, keep looking.
    • Qualified and caring staff – It’s probably easy for many people to source of a few materials and find a location to set up their pre school. However, if the passion and qualifications are not there, it is often easy for all to see. Because of the important role of a preschool teacher, you should look at how the teachers interact with the children in their classes as well as among themselves and the Principal/owner. The teachers should be coming down to the children’s level and not yelling or speaking above them – as pointed out by research. Interaction between the teachers will tell you if they are motivated to be there. Find out if they are well-paid and how many years they have been at the school. A high turnover of staff at the pre school should be a red flag. It is not rude to ask what qualifications the teachers possess to be able to be teaching pre schoolers. While at that, find out if the pre school is registered or adheres to the laws and regulations in your town, province, state or country.
    • Facilities and environment – This is about how a preschool classroom should look and probably another obvious one. The pre school will need to have child-sized furniture in their classroom – we often see colourful chairs, tables, mats etc at preschools. These are supposed to ensure that the children are comfortable while they learn. Also pay attention that the classrooms have ample space – we are not looking for a big classroom, but space that matches the number of students in the classroom. The setting is also important, the classrooms should be print-rich – you know letter and number charts on the walls and kids’ books. Student art and writing should also be evident in the classroom during your pre school tour.
    •  Activities and outings – Perhaps this is the least consideration on this list. But a pre school that also organises sports days with other schools, tours to the fire station, the local airfield or farm to me are signs of a good preschool and gets that extra mark. After all, research says play is the vehicle to learning.

Importance of choosing the right preschool

It’s probably just a pre school right? Wrong – play schools, or preschools, form an important part of your child’s education. So, it’s important that as a parent you choose the best one for your child.

Besides, you will probably be spending a good portion of your income on your child’s pre school it only makes sense that it be a good investment.

“There’s increasing evidence that children gain a lot from going to preschool,” Kathleen McCartney, PhD, dean of Harvard Graduate School of Education, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, told Parents.com.

“At preschool, they become exposed to numbers, letters, and shapes. And, more important, they learn how to socialize — get along with other children, share, contribute to circle time.”

Children who attend high-quality pre school enter school with better pre-reading skills, richer vocabularies, and stronger basic math skills than those who do not.

Your child will learn how to raise his or her hand, take turns, and share the teacher’s attention. What’s more, he or she will learn how to separate from Mommy. All of this makes for an easier transition to schooling.

In addition to strengthening socialization skills – how to compromise, be respectful of others, and problem-solve, pre school provides a place where your child can gain a sense of self, explore, play with her peers, and build confidence.

Kids in preschool discover that they are capable and can do things for themselves, from small tasks like pouring their own juice and helping set snack tables to tackling bigger issues like making decisions about how to spend their free time.

Questions to ask on a preschool tour

When you visit a pre school, it is important that you ask the correct questions.

    Consider asking the questions below:

    • Does my child need to be toilet-trained? Many preschools require that a child be out of diapers.
    • How are parents involved in the school? A good sign is an active parent association that plans programs like family picnics, holiday parties, and parent socials. You might want to talk to other parents — the preschool should give you names.
    • How will the teacher let me know about my child’s progress? Parents should be kept informed with newsletters, e-mails, and regular parent-teacher conferences.
    • What do you do when two children are fighting? It’s crucial that you agree with the school’s discipline policy.
    • What’s the daily routine? You want your child to have a sense of predictability each day — circle time, snack, reading.

    Conclusion

It is our hope that the article above has answered some of the questions you had when you landed here about how to pick a pre school for your child.

When choosing a pre school for your child consider, things like the reputation of the school. But you cannot choose a school based on that alone. It is a good idea to physically take a pre school tour and look at things like the location, the curriculum, the teaching staff, the pre school’s facilities and activities.

At Kids Connection magazine, our expert has also written an article on how to choose a school for your child once you they have graduated from pre school. It is well worth a read even today!

  • How to get rid of acne for good

We have all been there, the dreaded acne outbreak. This always seems to arrive at the most inconvenient of times.

Suffering from a bright red blemish? We’ve got you covered with a list of three acne treatment options guaranteed to get your complexion back to looking its best.

    What is acne?

According to Wikipedia;  “Acne, also known as acne vulgaris, is a long-term skin disease that occurs when hair follicles are clogged with dead skin cells and oil from the skin. It is characterized by blackheads or whiteheads, pimples, oily skin, and possible scarring.”

Here are three ways to get rid of acne

    1. You can buy over the counter topical treatments from your local beauty and health store, or pharmacy.
    2. More serious cases of acne may require systemic treatment in the form of oral medication as prescribed by your doctor or dermatologist.
    3. Self-care and good hygiene practices can improve and even eradicate acne in mild cases.

    Identifying your type of acne

Acne is a skin condition that can occur on the face, neck, shoulders, chest and back. Acne varies from person to person, with some cases being mild and able to be cured with over-the-counter medications, while other cases are more serious and require a medical professional’s expertise.

Before rushing out to buy the first acne treatment you see on the shelf, take a moment to analyse your blemishes. There are two categories in which acne blemishes fall; namely non-inflammatory and inflammatory lesions.

    Non-inflammatory Acne

Non-inflammatory acne is less severe and comes in two forms; whiteheads and blackheads. Whiteheads occur when skin pores become clogged with oil, dead skin or bacteria.

A blackhead is a blocked skin pore (a whitehead) which has remained open, resulting in discolouring once in contact with the air.

Mild to moderate non-inflammatory acne is easily curable with over the counter medications and home remedies.

    Inflammatory Acne

Inflammatory acne is more severe and may lead to other skin complications, dark spots and scarring if not treated. The four types of Inflammatory acne are; papules, pustules, nodules and cysts.

Papules are inflamed blemishes where the walls of the pores of the skin have broken down and become hard and tender to the touch. Papules are pink to red in colour and form a small raised bump on the surface of the skin.

Pustules are the next stage of papules. As the papules walls continue to deteriorate white blood cells flood the area in an effort to restore the pore. The white blood cells cause the formation of puss which gives the pustule its distinct white head appearance.

Nodules or nodular acne is a severe form of acne which affects the deeper levels of the skin and cannot be treated with over-the-counter medication. Nodular acne occurs when pustules are aggravated further causing them to grow and affect deeper underneath the skin.

To treat nodular acne, you will need to consult a dermatologist who will examine the severity of your acne and then prescribe oral medication.

Cysts or cystic acne is the most severe type of inflammatory acne. Cysts are very large, red, pus-filled pores which are quite painful. Cysts form at an even deeper level than nodular acne and are a result of a severe infection.

Cystic acne will not go away by itself and will result in scarring if not treated. A consultation with your dermatologist is the best treatment for cystic acne.

The below image shows the different types of pimples you may be experiencing.

    Why does acne occur?

Another question you may find yourself asking is; “Why am I experiencing an acne breakout?” The reason varies from person to person, however, there are a few factors known to trigger acne:

    • Puberty
    • Genetics
    • Hormones,
    • Stress and depression,
    • Oil-based makeup,
    • Poor hygiene practices
    • Poor diet
    • Sweat and humidity and
    • Squeezing pimples.

Now that you have analysed your blemishes and have a little background into what causes acne, let’s discuss the three acne treatment options you can explore.

Topical treatments to get rid of acne

Topical acne treatment refers to medication that is applied to the body surface in the form of creams, gels, foams or ointments. Topical acne treatment is only recommended for mild acne outbreaks.

There is a wide range of over-the-counter acne cleansers, but the best treatments are products which include acne fighting ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or sulfur.

    • Benzoyl peroxide kills bacteria causing acne.
    • Glycolic acid is often used in conjunction with Benzoyl peroxide due to its ability to inhibit acne bacteria growth.
    • Salicylic acid helps to unblock skin pores, dissolve skin debris and prevent blemishes.
    • Sulfer is used in conjunction with Salicylic Acid and Benzoyl peroxide due to its ability to remove dead skin cells from blocked pores.

Systemic treatments to get rid of acne

Systemic acne medications are drugs such as antibiotics or hormone pills that spread throughout the body via the bloodstream to clear the acne infection from the inside out.

    • Antibiotics are often used to kill bacteria and reduce inflammation in severe cases of acne where there is an infection.
    • Birth control or hormone medication can also be prescribed to control hormonal acne outbreaks.

It is important to note that oral drugs such as antibiotics and hormone pills cannot be bought over-the-counter without a doctor’s prescription.

Self-care practices to get rid of acne

Acne is also known to be triggered by unhealthy lifestyle practices and choices. By adjusting your lifestyle and working on the below factors you may be able to prevent an outbreak from even happening in the first place.

    • Ensure you maintain a good skincare routine by washing your face twice daily.
    • Ensure you wash your face after exercise or if you wear makeup.
    • Do not go to bed wearing makeup.
    • Avoid the use of oily face and hair products.
    • Do not over exfoliate your skin as this can irritate and inflame the skin.
    • Ensure you get enough sleep
    • Manage stress with fitness, yoga or meditation
    • Avoid foods high in sugar and processed foods
    • Drink plenty of water and
    • Include acne-fighting foods in your diets such as fresh vegetables and fish.

There are also many natural home remedies one can try to clear up a mild case of acne. These are common household items or products that can be bought from any health shop or grocery store.

Apply Apple Cider Vinegar: Apple cider vinegar contains organic acids that help kill the bacteria that cause acne.

Take a Zinc Supplement: Zinc is known to have anti-inflammatory properties and fights off bacteria.

Honey: Honey has antibacterial properties, reduces inflammation and aids in the skin healing process.

Tea Tree Oil: Tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic and great for acne spot treatment.

Green Tea: The anti-inflammatory properties help to reduce redness and swelling associated with acne.

Witch Hazel: The anti-inflammatory properties of witch hazel can help soothe skin inflammation. Witch Hazel is also an astringent as it contains tannins, which helps shrink skin pores.

Aloe Vera: The antibacterial and antifungal useful in treating inflammation like boils and cysts on the skin.

Omega-3: Omega-3 fatty acids are natural anti-inflammatories. You can get the benefits of Omega-3 by taking fish oil supplement or by including seafood such as salmon and mackerel in your diet.

The do’s and don’ts of pimples and acne

When it comes to pimples and acne you can feel pressured to get a quick fix or worse pick at your pimples. Below is a list of things you absolutely must not do.

    Don’ts:

    • Never pop your pimples! Doing this can lead to scarring, spread infection, and worsen breakouts.
    • Do not excessively touch your face or pick at your skin as bacteria from your hands may spread to your pores.
    • Do not scrub your skin as this will further irritate your inflamed skin.
    • Do not over wash your face as this can make pimples worse.
    • Do not use over-the-counter acne treatments in addition to prescriptions without checking with your doctor.
    • Do not over moisturise as this could further clog your pores
    • Do not get despondent. Be patient with your skincare treatment as you may only see improved results in a few weeks’ time.
    • Do not apply toothpaste to acne as this does not work. Toothpaste is too strong for the skin and leads to extreme dryness.

    Do’s:

    • Use non-comedogenic moisturisers, foundation and makeup as they won’t clog pores or worsen breakouts.
    • Ensure you wear sunscreen everyday even if you are not experiencing a breakout as the strong ingredients in acne medications can increase skin sensitivity.
    • Use alcohol-free skin products to prevent skin dehydration.
    • You can apply ice for relief in severe cases where acne lesions are swollen and painful.
    • Follow a healthy, balanced diet, and avoid those acne-inducing foods listed earlier on.

    When to see a Doctor/Dermatologist?

If you have tried a number of different over-the-counter acne treatments and your complexation has not improved or if it has deteriorated further, then it is time to seek professional help.

You can make an appointment with your local GP who can refer you to a dermatologist if the case is deemed severe and requires specialist treatment. Your dermatologist will be able to provide you with a skincare regime that is designed specifically for your skin type and needs.

Acne is not only skin deep, it can also affect a person’s confidence, lead to low self-esteem and depression in teenagers and adults.

    Conclusion

Don’t lose hope, acne is not incurable and there are many options and treatments available to get you back to looking your best in just a few weeks!

To make your acne treatment easier, remember these four points:

    1. Identify your type of acne outbreak.
    2. Get the correct treatment for your type of acne – not all Acne is treated the same.
    3. Identify what is triggering your acne outbreaks and adjust your lifestyle accordingly.
    4. Seek professional medical help for severe cases of acne.

Hope you found the above helpful in your quest to get rid of those troublesome pimples.

  • Experience traditional Karate and Kobudo at Kiryoku Dojo, Port Elizabeth

Karate is a lifestyle sport that teaches children and adults a wide range of skills.

Discipline, increased self-esteem, confidence, self control and fitness are a few of those benefits. At Kiryoku Dojo, Okinawan Shorin-ryu Shorinkan Karate and Kobudo (traditional weapons) are taught.

The focus is on building a strong foundation in traditional Karate and on teaching practical self-defense skills.

Kiryoku means durability of spirit, Inner energy and willpower. All these aspects are at the core of this Karate dojo together with the five Karate principles – character, sincerity, effort, etiquette and self-control.

Kiryoku Dojo is a karate school catering for the whole family with classes for adults and children, bringing the love of this lifestyle to all. Students are taught respect and develop social skills, defying the use of violence and aggression, but gain an understanding for the importance of self-defense skills.

France Harington, owner of Kiryoku Dojo, has been involved in karate for more than 16 years. Many people may also know her from her other successful fitness enterprise – France’s Aquatics Port Elizabeth.

Kiryoku Dojo will teach your kids needed life skills

The dojo opened its doors in 2016, and at the time catered exclusively to adults. However, in January 2018, Sensei France decided to offer classes for children/teens.

“When some of my adult students showed interest in introducing karate to their children, it became apparent that this would be a great opportunity to bring this life skill and lifestyle to the whole family, a necessity in my opinion in today’s society,” explained France.

At Kiryoku Dojo, focus is on individual progress, even within a group situation. This enables children to grow and achieve goals at their own pace while also learning to cope and interact in team situations.

Students are encouraged to participate in camps, leagues and competitions further enhancing their confidence and coping skills. The benefits have also been evident in increased focus and respect in the school environment. Hence, the reason karate is called a lifestyle.

The classes take place at the Moregrove School Hall in Port Elizabeth. Children’s classes are held on Mondays and Thursdays from 6 – 7 pm. Adult classes are held on Mondays and Thursdays from 7.30 – 8.45pm.

  • What is physical education and its importance?

Physical education focuses on overall wellness, fitness and healthy habits

Over the years, physical education in schools has evolved from being a glorified break-time activity or drills to determine, who can run the fastest and jump the highest to being something of a structured program.

We now know physical education teaches children overall wellness, fitness and health habits that will benefit them in their lives. Thus, it is important to note that physical education programs are not only meant for athletic children as they are meant to improve physical fitness and health rather than show, who is better.

Globally, evidence points to children becoming less active because they would rather play computer games or watch TV than be outdoors. However, they also face an increased risk of contracting traits, such as atherosclerosis, hypertension and obesity, which have been shown to track into their adulthood.

As a result, at the time of publishing, in the United States, lawmakers were debating a bill that will require every elementary school with children in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade to provide at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week, including 90 minutes of physical education.

    What is physical education?

It is probably a good idea that we answer the question – what is physical education? Wikipedia explains: Physical education, also known as Phys Ed., PE, gym, or gym class, and known in many Commonwealth countries as physical training or PT, is an educational course related of maintaining the human body through physical exercises.

Physical education focuses on developing physical fitness and the ability to perform and enjoy day-to-day physical activities with ease.

During physical education classes, kids also develop skills necessary to participate in a wide range of activities, such as soccer, basketball, or swimming.

    History of physical education

The history of physical education goes back to around 1820 when schools focused on gymnastics, hygiene training and care and development of the human body. It grew as a program that by the 1950’s, physical education was taught as a major at many institutions in the United States.

Still, it was not until 1970 that young women at high schools and colleges were allowed to compete in athletic competitions.

It is also important to note that physical education programs have not always enjoyed support in schools as they are often the first casualties during times of financial difficulty.

However, recent awareness on the need for physical education programs due to concern over child obesity – due to children spending more time on non-physical activities like video games, has brought physical education back in the spotlight.

The definition of physical education has also evolved. Unlike in the beginning, it no longer only encompasses traditional sports, but now includes several less physical activities such as yoga and meditation, which are lauded for helping students develop a sense of control in a stress-filled world.

What is the importance of physical education?

True, physical education is often treated as a marginal subject within the curriculum – with Maths, English and Science taking all the attention. An increased pressure to produce exam results is also to blame according to experts.

In fact, it has been argued that physical education offers more entertainment than education. But, the importance of physical education, especially in children cannot be overstated.

Research shows that physical activity serves an extremely important role in the physical, social and cognitive or intellectual development of children.

    Some benefits of physical activities:

    • Physical skills and confidence – Physical education helps students develop physical skills and confidence through activities such as running, catching, throwing, and striking, applicable to sports such as baseball, volleyball, or karate. Balancing skills can be obtained from dance or gymnastics.
    • Fostering teamwork and social skills – This one is a no-brainer; through physical activities, children learn to work with others (in the case of team sports) as well as how to interact with the world around them from an early age.
    • Health and fitness – As said earlier on, increasing hypertension in children and adolescents is becoming more prevalent as a result of obesity. Obesity itself has been linked to more children preferring video games and TV than playing outside.  Regular physical education classes prepare kids to be physically and mentally active, fit, and healthy into adulthood. Students become highly proficient in one or more sport and/or fitness activity of their choice, which they can participate in until their old age.
    • Safety – Through physical education, children also come to know and learn how to avoid injuries during the course of physical activity. They attain a better understanding of the functioning and mobility of the body.
    • Academic excellence – While physical education is often cut back so that children can attend more tutorials for better grades, research has, ironically, shown that physical education helps children attain better results.

    Risks/hazards associated with physical education

While the benefits of physical education are hard to ignore, it should also be noted that physical activity carries with it a certain risk or hazard for the participants.

Research shows that the number of accidents during physical educations classes is still substantial. Among the most common hazards are:

    • fractures of upper and lower limbs,
    • dislocations,
    • contusions,
    • tendonitis,
    • muscle tear and cuts.

Curiously, boys have been shown to experience such injuries more frequently than girls. Injuries in sports are common, but that is where safety education also plays a role.

Physical education is also sometimes blamed for eating into study time and therefore affecting the grades in cases where the student cannot balance the two. It requires a lot of discipline for a child to successfully balance the workload in class and on the field.

Like everything else, not every learner is cut out for physical education. Some children are naturals and others will struggle for one reason or the other. As a result, it can certainly lead to lowered self-esteem among students, who may be struggling to meet expectations in physical education.

While incidences are few, physical education reportedly carries a potential for bullying on the field. This is true in instances where physically-talented children will perceive those struggling in physical activities as weak.

Costs to parents are also a major concern as students will, in many cases, need sports gear and to pay activity fees.

Students, who are disabled or have certain health conditions, which render them unable to partake in physical education will always feel secluded.

    Types of physical activities

Risks of physical education outlined, let us look at the types of physical education available out there.

According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), there are four main types of physical activity, which are aerobic, muscle-strengthening, bone-strengthening, and stretching. Aerobic activity is the type that benefits your heart and lungs the most.

Aerobic Activity – Aerobic activity moves your large muscles, such as those in your arms and legs. Running, swimming, walking, bicycling, dancing, and doing jumping jacks are examples of aerobic activity. Aerobic activity also is called endurance activity.

The NHLBI says aerobic activity makes the heart beat faster than usual. You also breathe harder during this type of activity. Over time, regular aerobic activity makes your heart and lungs stronger and able to work better.

Muscle-strengthening activities These improve the strength, power, and endurance of muscles. Doing pushups and situps, lifting weights, climbing stairs, and digging in the garden are examples of muscle-strengthening activities.

Bone-strengthening activitiesThis type of physical activity focuses of feet, legs and arms, which support the body’s weight – your muscles push against your bones. This helps make your bones strong. Running, walking, jumping rope, and lifting weights are examples of bone-strengthening activities.

Muscle-strengthening and bone-strengthening activities These can also can be aerobic, depending on whether they make your heart and lungs work harder than usual. For example, running is both an aerobic activity and a bone-strengthening activity.

The NHLBI adds that stretching helps improve your flexibility and your ability to fully move your joints. Touching your toes, doing side stretches, and doing yoga exercises are examples of stretching.

How to get started with physical activities

Fortunately, physical activity is safe for almost everyone, young and old. You can take steps to make sure it’s safe for you too.

    • Be active on a regular basis to raise your fitness level.
    • Do activities that fit your health goals and fitness level. Start low and slowly increase your activity level over time. As your fitness improves, you will be able to do physical activities for longer periods and with more intensity.
    • Spread out your activity over the week and vary the types of activity you do.
    • Use the right gear and equipment to protect yourself. For example, use bicycle helmets, elbow and knee pads, and goggles.
    • Be active in safe environments. Pick well-lit and well-maintained places that are clearly separated from car traffic.
    • Follow safety rules and policies, such as always wearing a helmet when biking.

Make sensible choices about when, where, and how to be active. Consider weather conditions, such as how hot or cold it is, and change your plans as needed

    Conclusion

When most children are born, they are naturally physically active – and need opportunities to be active and to learn skills. This is where physical education comes in.

The importance of physical education – as part of the wider academic curriculum, is often understated and sometimes completely overlooked.

The aims for physical  education – such as health promotion, skills development as well as a focus on social and moral issues, sometimes causes confusion about the subject.

Research also shows that parent attitudes to physical education or physical activities play a major role in how children will adopt physical educations. A solution could be parents taking the lead and showing their children what they should do.

As parents you want to make sure that your child will become a dependable and responsible adult, and giving them chores and small tasks to take care of around the house is the first step in the right direction.

Kids Connection magazine also has a wide variety of offerings where both parents and their children or schools can engage in physical activities.

  • A moms preparations for their baby’s birth

Preparing for your baby’s birth can be frightening as there’s so much information thrown at you that you feel completely clueless most of the time.

Remember that millions and billions of women have been through what you are experiencing and that you are not alone.

To help make your pregnancy easier, Kids Connection has prepared a list of different topics to help you prepare for your baby.

    1.    Mommy and baby Checklist for labour and delivery

    2.    What to wear during labour

    3.    How to have easy labour

    4.    How to tell the difference between Braxton Hicks and true labour

Real labour compared to how it’s portrayed in movies

Labour is clearly nothing like how it’s portrayed in movies, where water breakage is the only concern actors worry about.

New moms are often clueless about what they will need during labour, delivery and postpartum but this doesn’t mean that mom is destined to be a bad parent.

With no knowledge of what to pack, moms will often over pack and bring a ton of things they don’t need. But hey, better safe than sorry, right?

Mommy and baby checklist for labour and delivery

For mommy, it is advisable to pack your clothes and toiletries like any away from home stay and also have your medical records handy, so that your doctors can easily see your medical history.

    Mommy’s checklist:

    §    Pack of maternity pads

§    Lightweight, front opening cotton pyjamas (one set per day)

    §    Three feeding bras

    §    Maternity pads

    §    Slippers and socks

    §    Gown

    §    Toiletries

    §    Hairdryer and brush

    §    Mirror

    §    Money (at own risk)

§    Black pen and copies of ID documents of both parents (for birth registration)

§    Set of clothes and shoes for going home.

    §    Two facecloths (preferably dark-coloured)

§    All chronic medication, pregnancy vitamins, etc.

§    Cell phone, charger and double adapter (at own risk)

    Baby’s checklist

It is advisable to aim to have your hospital bag ready between 32 and 35 weeks.

You can start earlier because by the time you reach 35 weeks you might be too tired to do anything or the baby may decide to come earlier than expected.

You may start to write down all the essentials you and your baby will need from the 28th week which is the beginning of your last trimester.

For the baby you can pack:

§    Five sets of clean baby clothes; vest, Babygro’s, wrapper/receiving blanket, socks, beanie

    §    One warm blanket

    §    A pack of new-born nappies

    §    Baby wipes

    §    Petroleum jelly

    §    Surgical spirits

    §    Cotton wool

    §    Cleansing lotion

    §    Moisturiser

    §    Baby beanie

    §    Disposable panties

    §    Small changing mat

    What to wear during labour

Things such as what to wear during labour may seem silly but that is a serious concern for first time pregnant women.

The hospital offers gowns to moms who are not worried much about the clothing they wear on the day they give birth.

However, it is not a must for patients to wear those gowns.

It is also important to remember that photos might get taken on that day and end up on social media. So, be sure that you won’t mind posing for a photo while wearing a hospital gown

Healthline has advised those who really don’t want to wear anything issued by the hospital to keep to the following considerations in mind:

    •    Keep it washable. All manner of bodily fluids could be flung about during labour and delivery. Don’t wear something that can’t be washed or thrown out completely.

    •    Stay open. Easy access to your belly and genital area will be required frequently. Between IVs, epidurals, fetal heart-rate monitors, cervical checks, and more, it’s easier on everyone if you’re mostly undressed or wearing something that allows for quick access.

    •    Allow for movement. You may end up walking the halls or moving about during labour. Keep in mind that something that allows for movement and provides some coverage could be important.

    •    Show some skin. Skin-to-skin contact with your newborn is essential after delivery. If you’re breastfeeding, you won’t want to struggle with your clothing.

Guidelines to make labour more comfortable

    1.    Eat well

    2.    Exercise

    3.    Take childbirth classes

    4.    Avoid excessive sleeping during pregnancy

    Eat well

To have an easy labour and a healthy baby, moms to be are advised to stick to a healthy diet.

Some people mistake eating for two as a licence to indulge in an unhealthy diet, but it is quite the opposite.

    preparing for a baby's birth1

What does eating for two mean?

Eating for two means eating healthy because your growing baby is vulnerable to toxins, and he or she needs all the nutrients you can provide to grow into a strong and healthy baby.

What are the benefits of eating healthy during pregnancy?

    • Reduces complications
    • Ensures a healthy weight for your Baby
    • Sets the stage for good health
    • Helps you lose weight faster
    • Eating healthy during your pregnancy can reduce the risk of escalating high blood pressure during labour and it can reduce complications during labour.

For women who want to lose pregnancy weight faster, sticking to a healthy diet during your nine months pregnancy period could be a great benefit.

A healthy diet for a mom to be = A healthy baby.

Unborn babies indulge on their mommy’s diet, which means that if the mother is eating healthy, then health complications for the unborn baby will be avoided.

Low birth weight can set babies up for a lifetime of health complications or disabilities.

    Exercise during pregnancy

It is very common for first moms to be very cautious during their pregnancy to avoid complications; however, it is advised for moms to be to exercise in order to have a smooth and easy labour.

Exercising during pregnancy is highly advised especially if you were already physically active before you were pregnant.

However, now that you are pregnant you must remember to take it easy because it is not the time to be exercising for weight loss as you were before.

If you want to start on a new exercise routine, you should consult your health care provider.

The benefits of exercising during pregnancy:

    1.    Improves your mood

    2.    Improves your posture

    3.    Helps you sleep better

    4.    Increase your energy

    5.    Promotes muscle tone, strength, and endurance

    preparing for a baby's birth2

Types of exercise to keep you fit and healthy during your pregnancy

    1.    Brisk walking: Taking walks 30+- minute walks around your neighbourhood is advised to provide a cardiovascular workout without too much impact on the knees and ankles

    2.    Swimming: Apparently the buoyancy offered by the water may offer some relief from the extra weight.

Seeing other moms too be slaying their baby bump in class can limit your stress and boost your confidence.

Taking the childbirth classes with your partner will create a special bond.

You will learn about pain relief options, relaxation, breathing techniques, medications and so on.

    Avoid excessive sleeping during pregnancy

Pregnant women struggle to resist sleep. Sleeping is also likely to be the first sign of pregnancy they may notice.

However, excessive sleeping during pregnancy can cause preeclampsia, a condition that occurs during pregnancy.

How can I tell the difference between Braxton Hicks and true labour?

Braxton hicks can be easily confused with real labour pains, especially by first-time moms.

    What are Braxton Hicks?

Braxton Hicks are false labour pains that come and go within minutes.  They prepare your body for real labour pains.

However, they are not a sign of labour or an indication that labour has begun or will begin soon.

How early can you feel Braxton Hicks?

Braxton Hicks may feel like menstruation pains, but they do not cause labour or open the Cervix.

When can you start having Braxton Hicks contractions?

Braxton hicks usually occur during the second trimester, they are contractions that feel like real labour but usually lessen as you move or change your body position.

What to do when you experience Braxton Hicks?

    •    Take a walk. False labour contractions often stop when you change position or get up and move.

    •    If you’ve been active, get some sleep or rest.

    •    Relax by taking a warm bath or by listening to music.

    •    Get a message.

    •    Baby “drops”

    •    Cervix dilates

    •    Cramps and increased back pain

    •    Loose-feeling joints

    •    Diarrhoea

    •    Weight gain stops

    •    Fatigue and “nesting instinct”

    •    Vaginal discharge changes colour and consistency

    •    Stronger, more frequent contractions

    •    Water breaks

    Baby drops

Around your 8th month of pregnancy, your baby will likely descend into your pelvis.

The reason for your baby to drop is because he/she is preparing to make his or her grand entry into the world.

    Cervix dilates

Slightly your cervix will start to open as it also prepares a door for your baby.

    Cramps and increased back pain

Cramping and back pain means that your body is preparing your muscles for the birth of your baby.

    Loose-feeling joints

This is also another sign that nature is preparing your body to push your baby out.

    Diarrhoea

Diarrhoea is also a sign of labour, but not all women experience this sign.

    Water breaks

You might experience frequent bathroom breaks because your baby’s head is pushing down your bladder.

Am I Going Into Labour? Should I Call the Doctor?

Being pregnant for the first time, you can never be really sure if you are having real labour signs or false labour.

    Call an ambulance if:

    •    If you experience something that you don’t understand, for example, more painful and longer contractions that are becoming constant then you should call an ambulance.

    •    If you experience any bleeding or bright-red discharge.

    •    Your water breaks

    •    You experience blurred or double vision, a severe headache, or sudden swelling.

    Conclusion

Pregnant moms should be ready for the birth 32 weeks into their pregnancy to avoid last minute rush and remember:

    • Enjoy a healthy diet
    • Exercise regularly
    • Take childbirth classes
    • Avoid excessive sleeping during pregnancy
    • Get to the hospital if you start experiencing signs of labour
  • How to choose a kids party venue

Being a parent comes with good times and stressful times. One of the many joys a parent can experience is throwing an epic birthday party for their kids. The look of joy on their face when they get presents and the smile on their face when they see all their friends and blow out their birthday candles can be a very memorable moment.

As a blogger for a parenting website and writer of reviews for kid-friendly activities, I have accumulated some good insight into what to look for when choosing the perfect party venue for your kids.

The top points for choosing a kids party venue are:

    1. Choose an age-appropriate venue
    2. Take your kids personality into consideration
    3. Keep the time-frame in mind
    4. Consider the theme of the party
    5. Choose a location that is close and convenient
    6. Consider the safety of the location
    7. Consider what kind of entertainment you want
    8. Will the party be indoors or outdoors?
    9. Does the venue have supervision?
    10. What supplies will the venue provide?
    11. How much are you willing to spend?
    12. Is having a home party an option?
    13. If you have friends with kids, don’t be shy to ask them for a referral

    Choose an age-appropriate venue

Not all party venues are suitable for children of all ages. You certainly can’t have a birthday party for a toddler at a paintball field. And some venues only allow for children up to a certain age too.

First you have to take your child’s age into consideration before you pick the party venue. When dealing with a toddler you want to make sure that there is enough supervision and safety in the venue to watch them and the other toddlers in attendance.

When dealing with an older child you want to make sure that the venue has enough entertainment to keep them and their friends from getting bored. Older children usually prefer thrilling activities such as paintball or laser tag for a party venue.

ow to choose a kids party venue 2

Take your kids personality into consideration

You want to make sure that the venue you choose to host your child’s party is something that they will actually enjoy. If your child prefers something simple like a visit to a local café or restaurant they will obviously not be happy with a party at a skate park.

Talk to your child about where they might like to have their party and work with them to decide on a venue. Toddlers won’t really care about where their party is, as long as they can have fun and eat sweets throughout the day.

Boys and girls generally have different ideas about what makes a good party.  You may want to consider a girls only party or a boys only party if the activity is very gender skewed.

Most party venues cater for both genders.  It may only be the décor or the activity at the vendor that is the deciding factor for a gender based party.

    Keep the time-frame in mind

You need to take into account the opening and closing hours of a venue and the time the kids need to be home when choosing a venue.  Keep in mind that a venue may have a limited time available because they have more than one party scheduled for that day.

What time does the venue open? How long can you rent out the venue for? You also need to take into account what your own child’s mood is like at certain times of the day.

Kid’s parties are traditionally held from late morning until sometime in the afternoon – the optimum time when kids have energy and are the most active.

Once you have the time-frame figured out you can contact venues and check to see if they are available and make your booking.

Consider the theme of the party

There will be times when you want to throw your child a themed birthday party. Be it dinosaurs, Dora the Explorer, Barbie, Superheroes or pirates, a themed party is something all kids enjoy.

If you and your kid have decided on a theme you need to make sure that the venue you choose works well with the theme. It wouldn’t make sense to have a Spiderman themed birthday party in a cute café or a Barbie themed party on a putt-putt course or paintball field.

The theme will also affect the kind of décor you will have for your kid’s party. Check if the venue allows you to decorate or if they will decorate for you as part of their service – It might save you time and money in the process.

You might end up choosing a venue because of the party theme. For example if you have a farm themed party you will probably choose an animal farm as a venue.

Choose a location that is close and convenient

The easiest way to make the parents happy when arranging a kid’s party is to choose a location that is not too out of the way. The general rule of thumb is to choose a venue that is no more than an hours’ drive away.

You also want to make sure that the venue you choose is easy to find and not complicated to reach via car. Will the parents be able to find the venue on Google Maps?

As a parent you want to make sure you give your child their perfect party venue but you also want to make sure that the venue is not in an inconvenient location for the parents of your child’s friends.

If the party is going to be in a place that is only accessible through a gravel road you might want to give the parents a heads up before the party.

You can also send directions in case the venue cannot be found on Google Maps or is in a new venue that doesn’t have a location on Google Maps.

Consider the safety of the location

You need to be very considerate about the safety of a kid’s party venue, especially when you have toddlers and younger children.

You want to make sure that the venue is enclosed so that none of the kids wander off and go missing.

Don’t rely on the parents of the kids to maintain safety.  They may drop and go or they may end up conversing with other parents.

Venues that provide their own supervision are awesome!

    Consider the type of entertainment

Entertainment at a party is not the same thing as a theme.  Entertainment involves the use of a third party to entertain the kids.

Typical types of entertainment include face painting, clowns, visits to an animal touch farm, lazer games, paintball etc.

Be sure to inform parents of the type of entertainment as it may affect  what the child wears to the party.

Some party venues provide entertainment of their own, which can be a deciding factor when picking a venue.

An indoor party VS an outdoor party

The primary factor when choosing indoor or outdoor venues is the weather.  Wet or cold weather = indoors and warm, sunny weather = outdoors.

Many venues cater for both and these are best as they allow for easy adaptation.

    Does the venue have supervision?

Being a parent, you value the safety of your child above all else. Certain venues have trained professionals and staff that will help keep an eye on your kids so that you can focus on party preparations and socialising with other parents.

Supervision gives the parents of the other children peace of mind and they will love you for the fact that you gave them an opportunity to relax.

    Choosing a party package

Some venues have an all-inclusive package which provides food, goodie bags and even cake and decorations for the party. You literally rock up at the party, have fun and leave.

Most venues offer a range of options to suite your budget or the level of involvement you as a parent wish to have.

Most venues have their packages well-presented and clearly defined, however, it is a good idea to get clarification on all aspects.

Keep in mind that the packages are based on the number of kids and their parents attending.

How much are you willing to spend?

There are four key factors that affect the price of a kids party:

    1. The exclusivity of the venue – if the venue can only cater for one party at a time then the party is likely to be rather expensive.
    2. The quality of the venue and the standard of the equipment and supervision
    3. The size and quality of the party package that you choose
    4. The number of kids and their parents in attendance

Figure out your budget and then start factoring in these four items and you should be fine.

Is having a home party an option?

Can’t find a venue that works with your child’s vision? There is also the option of having your kid’s party at your home.

A home party means that you are in charge of everything. You will have to hire tables and chairs, goodie bags, snacks, decorations, entertainment and a birthday cake. Parties in your home mean that you will have to keep an eye on everything and clean up the mess when the party is over.

If your child is a little more shy than most they might prefer to have their party in the familiar environment of their own home.

Make sure that you have prepped your home for the party.  You don’t want to regret the party because of  stained carpets, broken ornaments and a destroyed garden.

    Ask for party venue referals

It can be a little daunting to choose the perfect party venue for your kids birthday, especially when there are so many options available.

That’s where your friends with kids can assist.

Ask them for references and experiences they had with kids parties.

Also check out TripAdvisor and Google’s business ranking.

    Conclusion

To make a success of a party remember the following:

    • Choose a theme, venue or entertainment that your child will love and that their friends will enjoy.
    • Select a location that is easy to find and that is accessible.
    • Match the venue to the age group and preferences of the group.
    • Ensure that there is always adequate supervision and don’t expect other parents to supervise.
    • Set your budget and shop around.
    • Get online or personal references.

I will never forget the fun times I had at my birthday parties growing up. My parents would go above and beyond to make sure that I had the best day ever no matter where we had the party.

With good planning you can throw an epic party without excessive stress.  Good luck!

  • Cultivating entrepreneurship in your toddlers with TinyPreneurs

Using a trained TinyPreneurs facilitator, Moolah the pig and fellow peers, this programme is a social activity that supports the child’s desire at this age to learn through cooperative playing and social interaction.

One might think that entrepreneurship is a difficult theme to address with 4 to 6-year-old’s. However, with the approach followed by TinyPreneurs, we might very soon have a lot of very young entrepreneurs!

The TinyPreneurs programme is a unique, innovative, and educational experience for children, as young as 4 years old, as they follow the journey and stories of Moolah, the pig puppet. TinyPreneurs was developed by Mr Danie Jacobs, CEO and Founder of Young Entrepreneurs, in collaboration with Ms Schoeme Grobler, who is an experienced puppeteer, who specifically works with small children.

The lessons are in story format and convey important concepts relating to business through entertainment and play.

Moolah the puppet takes the place of the child, and asks questions or admits confusion around themes of entrepreneurship and money, thereby connecting emotionally and cognitively with the child.

As the child’s flexible thinking and independence develops at this age, TinyPreneurs challenges and assists the child to think about themes of business.

TinyPreneurs classes happening at Young Entrepreneurs

Moola’s stories are followed by activities that challenges the child to apply what Moolah / the child has learned to his or her own life. These activities include imaginary play, craft time, storytelling, puzzles, games, planning tasks, matching, sorting, memory skills etc. Completing these activities leaves the child feeling confident and proud.

Using a trained TinyPreneurs facilitator, Moolah the pig and fellow peers, this programme is a social activity that supports the child’s desire at this age to learn through cooperative playing and social interaction.

  • Why chores are important for your child

There has been a lot of negative talk about the modern generation of children these days. Talk about the millennial generation and the many negative aspects that surround them; from entitlement to laziness, the children of today are met with much criticism.

Most of the blame for this has been placed on the parents and their ability to raise responsible and hardworking kids. Parents who are too protective of their children and are unable to let them wander and become responsible for themselves.

That is why it is important for parents not to helicopter around their kids and give them some responsibilities around the house; such as chores.

Chores will help your child grow into a responsible adult

As parents you want to make sure that your child will become a dependable and responsible adult, and giving them chores and small tasks to take care of around the house is the first step in the right direction.

In recent years parents have lowered their expectations of children, which is what has led to most of them growing up and becoming lazy and entitled.

Some parents thought it better for their kids to focus on their homework rather than menial tasks around the house, while others children end up taking part in too many activities that their parents felt they didn’t have time to do chores.

What these parents needed to know was that having your child do chores can be just as important for your child’s future as everything else.

Chores can help your child figure out what they are capable of

Chores are tasks that your children can finish quickly and easily. Depending on the kind of work you have them do it can help them develop a strong work ethic as well as a sense of pride knowing that they are contributing to helping their family.

When your child eventually has to leave the nest and live without the help of their parents they will find that doing chores in the house has prepared them for living alone and will cause them to struggle less when adjusting to being their own boss.

Remember, your kids will thank you one day when they are older for trusting them with the responsibility to do chores in the house.

  • Take some time to read to your child

With so many kids focused on technology lately, most parents become concerned about their child’s development and creative thinking as they get older. With tablets, phones and TV taking up so much of their attention there is a slight concern that your child might end up like Mike Teavee from Roald Dahls’ Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

That’s why it is important to get a book, be it a kindle or a hardcopy, and take some time to read to your child. When you start reading to your children from a younger age, ideally from kindergarten, it will positively affect their development and skills development much earlier than other children.

“Oh, books, what books they used to know, Those children living long ago! So please, oh please, we beg, we pray, Go throw your TV set away, And in its place you can install A lovely bookshelf on the wall.” – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Here are just some of the reasons why you should read to your child from a young age:

Get them on the path to success

Reading to children lets them absorb knowledge and expand their minds. If you start reading to them from when they are babies or toddlers they will have a head start when they start school later in life and will be better prepared for it.

The earlier you read to them the sooner they can start to learn how to read for themselves. Not only is reading an incredibly important skill for a child, it can be an enjoyable experience for them as well. A child that enjoys reading will do better with their language subjects and any other subjects as well.

    Develop their language skills

Parents talk to their children every day, and as a parent you will notice that the vocabulary that you use to communicate with each other is rather repetitive. Reading to your child however, will expose them to a whole new vocabulary and words and phrases that they wouldn’t usually hear in their daily lives.

If your child speaks more than one language, getting them to read or reading to them will help them with their fluency and language skills development.

Give your child’s brain a workout

When reading to your child, their brain activity will be affected and they will be given a much needed boost to convince them to develop their reading skills early on in life.

Language development in children can be heavily affected if you read to them and encourage them to start reading from an early age. It gives their brain a well-deserved workout and gets them thinking about things and broadens their imaginations early on in life.

    Improve their concentration

Children are easily distracted; this is especially true for toddlers. So while you might think that reading to them from such a young age where they are only interested in turning the pages and flipping through the pictures, reading to them is still a very important task.

If you make sure to read to your child on a daily basis and keep a constant time and place for reading, it will help your child develop their concentration skills and teach them how to sit still for long periods of time. Teaching them this will also make them more ready for when they start going to school.

    Develop a thirst for knowledge

When you read to your child they will most likely want to ask you questions about what you are reading to them and the story itself. Kids love to ask questions, and an inquisitive mind is a mind that want to learn and grow.

Reading to your kids will help them develop a thirst for knowledge; use this opportunity to create a learning experience for your child. It might also help them develop interest in other fields such as different languages and cultures.

Explore a world of pure imagination

A wonderful benefit to reading to your child from an early age is getting to see their imagination and creativity grow. As the reader you have to put yourself in the shoes of the characters and imagine what they are doing.

The reality of the characters becomes your own reality and you can see first-hand the excitement on your child’s face as they wait and see what happens next as you continue to read to them.

Try to ask them what they think is going to happen next as you read the story to them. It will make them feel like they are a part of the adventure as well. It will also help them develop a sense of empathy as they learn more about the main characters of the story and their experiences.

    Reading can strengthen your relationship

There is no better feeling than having your little one cuddle up to you as you read to them. Spending time by talking to each other and reading to them will bring you closer to your children.

Parents are very busy and have to work most of the time, so spending time by reading to your children can help you wind down, relax and create a special bond with each other that will last for a long time.

  • How to help your child build their self-confidence

In today’s society bullying and peer pressure have increased in intensity and frequency. Not to mention that bullies tend to find new and harmful ways to break our children down and try to destroy their confidence.

All children face hard times, and it’s a parents job to help equip them with enough confidence to survive and thrive in the world today.

Here’s how you can help build self-confidence in your child:

    Show them you love them

Love is the top most important thing you can give your child. The feeling of love and being accepted needs to start with family; the feeling then needs to extend through to other groups such as friends, classmates and their teammates in sports or clubs.

There will be times when you get mad and end up yelling at your child. At times like this you need to give your child a hug and let them know that even though you yelled at them you still love them and that you are sorry.

Discovering unconditional love will be the perfect foundation for your child’s confidence.

    Positive feedback is important

Children like knowing that any good work they do will be rewarded and met with praise. When your child learns new things or has a positive achievement make sure to let them know how proud you are of them and that they have done a good job.

In instances where your child fails at something make sure to praise their effort in trying the task. Don’t praise them unrealistically; let them know that it is alright not to be good at everything.

Teach them that practice and repeat effort can help them improve at tasks they are having difficulty with. Though you should also let them know that its fine to move on from the task after giving in the effort to try it.

Work together to set realistic goals

When your child takes on a task of joins their first sports team, it’s perfectly fine to let them believe that they will eventually become the best or end up in the Olympics. However if your child has problems qualifying and still thinks they are the best you need to work together to create more realistic goals.

If their goals seem to be a little far-fetched, discuss some short-term goals that are within reach that will help them along their path.

    Teach them to love themselves

Promote self-love within your child as much as possible. Your child needs to see that you love yourself before they can love themselves.

Model this behaviour by praising your own efforts and giving yourself a reward when you do well. Celebrate any success you experience in your life with your children and make them feel included in your celebrations.

Talk about the skills you used and the effort you put in in order to achieve what you have and encourage your children by reminding them about their own set of skills and how they can be developed and used for their own future success.

Teach them to get back up again

Failure is something that everyone has to face in life. Success doesn’t always happen on the first try and kids need to be prepared to properly handle this truth.

Make any failures, criticisms and pain that they experience tools that can be used to teach your child instead of having them dwell on it. While it is important to teach your child to keep trying and not to give up easily, you also need to validate your child’s own feelings.

This will help your child trust their own feelings and be more comfortable sharing them in the future. They will learn that setbacks are just a part of life and can be dealt with. Don’t smother them with pity or put them down about their failures, instead talk about steps they can take to improve and do better in the future.

    Encourage independence and adventure

Trying things without fear or the worry of failure is something every self-confident child possesses. Set up situations and things that your child can accomplish by themselves. Make sure to supervise and keep the area safe while also staying at a distance.

Get them comfortable with exploring new and interesting places outside. Trips during the day, outings and trips with classmates or teammates will expand your child’s horizons, increase their confidence and teach them how to handle new situations.

    Encourage their passions

It’s great when your child discovers something they excel at, and as a parent you want to respect and encourage their interest. Its fine if your child has an interest that you yourself are not interested in, as long as you praise your child when they accomplish something during their pursuits.

Make sure that this does not cut into school work and any of their responsibilities at home though.

    Set rules and guidelines

Confidence can build in your child once they have a grip on who is in charge and what they can expect in their homes. Make sure you set and enforce your rules consistently so that your child will have confidence with what they can or can’t do.

Every house is different, and rules will change as your child grows older. As they learnt to follow the rules they will develop confidence and a sense of security. The older they get the more input they will have on your rules.

Keep the line between being a parent and a friend separate when it comes to your rules. There will be times when your child is under the influence of peer pressure and will ask you to bend the rules, you need to keep your consistency and be able to say ‘no’ at times like this.

    Help them develop relationship skills

When it comes to your child’s self-confidence developing relationships with others and creating confidence with this is key. A parent-child relationship is very important, but your child must also be able to expand their social circles and see how their actions will affect others.

Teach your child to keep their inner core of confidence when they are affected by the actions of others. You cannot fix everything, but it is important to teach your child compassion, kindness and assertiveness so that they can handle the ups and downs of relationships.

  • How to wake up kids who don’t want to wake up

Sometimes waking up children in the morning can be the biggest challenge for parents as they have to juggle getting ready for work and finishing up the morning routine.

When kids sleep no matter what is happening around them; that might lead to some parents tempted to splash them with ice cold water or even banging a drum to get them up.

However, that is not the way to go about doing things especially if you want to have a good relationship with your kids.

Kid’s connection made a list of some less stressful suggestions to wake up kids who don’t want to wake up in the morning.

Make sure they’re getting enough sleep

According to National Sleep Foundation this is how much children should sleep:

    • Newborns (0-3 months): 14-17 hours each day.
    • Infants (4-11 months): 12-15 hours each day.
    • Toddlers (1-2 years): 11-14 hours each day.
    • Preschoolers (3-5): 10-13 hours each day.
    • School age children (6-13): 9-11 hours each day.
    • Teenagers (14-17): 8-10 hours each day.

If they did not get enough sleep the night before then there are plenty of chances that it is going to be difficult to wake them up in the morning the following day.

Let Them Go to Bed Earlier

It is very important to let your kids go to bed earlier than usual to make sure that they get enough sleep.

    Switch off technology

Technology can keep kids up until midnight, especially teenagers. Ensure that phones, computers, and Television are turned off when you tuck them up to bed to avoid having struggling to wake them up in the morning.

    Let in the light

Light is another motivation to wake up a person without yelling or banging doors.

    Set alarm

Buy a cute alarm clock that can be a play time during the day but also can be useful to wake the kids up in the morning.

    If all fails

You can always ask for advice from other parents.
